It\u2019s tech-related stuff usually along with IR35 for the past 6 months. Like most people, my colleague Alex thinks buying your first home is one of the best investments you can make. <em>Rent is dead money<\/em> after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I briefly argued against the point saying that although I\u2019m a pro-buy-your-own-home person, it\u2019s more about the security and the comfort that your own home can provide rather than the financial benefits. Probably half the amount you initially pay is <s>dead money<\/s> interest and then you have maintenance costs and property taxes to pay (if you\u2019re not in the UK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to mention your own labour costs if you decide to paint the rooms in your spare time \u201cfor free\u201d. Then also the total monthly payment is usually higher than the equivalent rent. This means there&#8217;s an opportunity cost of the rental money surplus as well. Simply put, you could have invested the money difference in a BTL, gold, stocks or whatever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So buying is not exactly a clear winner compared to rent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But why am I talking about property buy-vs-rent again? <strong>This article is about starting capital when investing!<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, Alex started talking about other investments after reaching a point where only spreadsheets and assumption-fights can give some meaningful progress to this discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So he started making the point that the reason most people don\u2019t invest is that <strong>they don\u2019t have much capital to start with<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what is a 10% annual return on \u00a3100? Just \u00a3110. Not much to show at the end of the year! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, this makes sense. I\u2019ve definitely heard that before. But I believe is inherently wrong. Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) It\u2019s not about investing \u00a3100, it&#8217;s about saving \u00a3100<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Investing \u00a3100 or even \u00a31000 won\u2019t make much of a difference, indeed. Not even compounding these returns over 10 years will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the biggest personal finance wins come from building the habit of saving \u00a3100 to start with. \u00a3100 invested is \u00a3100 saved which is much more important in the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if someone hasn\u2019t really invested or saved before, learning to save is an absolute must. People overestimate what they can do in a year and underestimate what they can do in a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you make some bad investments that actually lose money, it\u2019s much better than not having saved at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) If you do need much capital to start investing, how much is that?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ok, so say you do need much capital to make investing count. What is the cut-off point? And are you sure that when you actually DO accumulate the desired amount, you\u2019ll be able to execute your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxymonkey.com\/invest-with-confidence\/\">investment plan with confidence<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investing is half finance half psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d argue it\u2019s more psychology for the average investor and more finance for institutions, trust funds etc. I never felt &#8220;now is the right time to invest&#8221;. It always feels uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when is the point that you <strong>start <\/strong>investing? How much do you need to accumulate first? Maybe \u00a310k will only bring \u00a31,000 a year, so not much impact there either. How about we agree it\u2019s \u00a330k, for \u00a33,000 a year? Will you ever reach that point or will you spend it on the way?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I guess it\u2019ll be hard to stick to your plan and keep accumulating until you reach \u00a330,000 when you have \u00a310,000 sitting around in your bank balance and you\u2019ve never invested before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how will you overcome the biggest barrier called fear?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) Mistakes are cheap when you start small<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A 20% loss on \u00a31,000 is just \u00a3200 which you can probably live with(out).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 20% loss on a \u00a330,000 portfolio is \u00a36,000, a much harder lesson to learn the hard way! You may even lose 20% on the first day of your investing. These things seem surreal in the past decade of euphoria, but <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"these things have happened (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Monday_(1987)\" target=\"_blank\">these things have happened<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning how you behave in a declining market is a lesson better taught when you\u2019re poorer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I started investing, I was paying a 6% annual fee before my money is invested in an ISA (thanks SJP). If this sounds like too much to you, it\u2019s because it is! So I was giving up 80% of my average profits. <strong>This was an expensive lesson which lasted for a year until my eyes opened.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So paying these lessons with small investments comes much cheaper overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the argument is clear, it\u2019s kind of counterintuitive.\u00a0 I kind of get it. I was always a natural saver. But\u00a0I only started investing when I had \u00a31,000 surplus every month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the point anyway, I was thinking. But I now clearly see that if I had invested earlier I could\u2019ve been in a better place now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I have a \u00a31,000 surplus a month, I\u2019m not living paycheck-to-paycheck. Therefore, I don&#8217;t really need to save as much compared to a person who\u2019s struggling to make ends meet. \u00a3100 a week saved\/invested is \u00a35,200 a year. Relatively speaking, \u00a35,200 a year may not change <em>my<\/em> life but it might as well do for someone who\u2019s struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With modern brokers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxymonkey.com\/recommends\/freetrade\/\" data-eafl-id=\"2651\" data-eafl-parsed=\"1\" class=\"eafl-link eafl-link-text eafl-link-cloaked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Freetrade<\/a>, you can start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxymonkey.com\/category\/investing\/\">investing<\/a> \u00a3100 a time in stocks, gold ETFs whatever you fancy. Fractional shares. But remember, investing is the carrot on a stick here. The biggest gain comes from the fact that you&#8217;re saving before investing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s better to build this habit of investing the earliest possible. Even if it\u2019s \u00a310 a week.
