Receive the bill, look up the amount and\u00a0pay it &#8211; no questions asked. 10 years can pass without a single change in the process.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how I used to be too. But here\u2019s the question.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_center\"><p>Why do some households pay \u00a340 and others \u00a360 for the same flat and\u00a0energy consumption? How can prices be <i>so<\/i> different if all companies offer the same resource?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is no such thing as &#8220;<strong>premium gas that heats your house faster&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0or &#8220;better electricity that charges your battery quicker&#8221;. So it must be down to the\u00a0quality of service &#8211;\u00a0time to setup, customer service, how quickly they fix my problems, and of course, marketing!<\/p>\n<p>This really struck me after moving to a new flat. The landlady suggested we carry on with her EDF dual bill plan. While I agree it\u2019s better to have both gas &amp; electricity supplied by the same provider\u00a0(that\u2019s what &#8220;dual bill\u201d means), I had to challenge the EDF part of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>EDF is a large energy supplier here in the UK, one of the &#8220;Big 6&#8221;. I never had a contract\u00a0with them and therefore don\u2019t know their quality of service. It turns out that the process of switching to them from my previous provider (E.on) would be the same hassle as signing up with a totally new provider. So I decided to research the market and find the best provider possible. This article explains how I did it.<\/p>\n<p><b>The purpose? Getting the best value for money. A budget deal (saved \u00a3707) with the best quality of service. These 2 vary from company to company but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxymonkey.com\/recommends\/uswitch\/\" data-eafl-id=\"1651\" data-eafl-parsed=\"1\" class=\"eafl-link eafl-link-text eafl-link-cloaked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">uSwitch<\/a> made it easy for me.<\/p>\n<p>They did the math and showed me a list of options. At this point, I wondered. Why the hell there are 100 different companies providing electricity? Wow.. That\u2019s\u00a0capitalism at its best\u2026! Anyway, more competition means better prices. But the\u00a0price is not the only thing that matters.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How quickly will I be able to switch?<\/li>\n<li>Is the customer service any good? What is the customer experience like?<\/li>\n<li>What if I want to leave early?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these questions can be answered with one simple click: <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.trustpilot.com\" target=\"_blank\">TRUSTPILOT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is Trustpilot?<\/b> An independent reviews website that people vote about their experiences with different companies. You would expect that only negative or fake positive\u00a0comments make it\u00a0there but surprisingly it works. They do \u2018verified order\u2019 reviews just like Amazon does when you order a product. This ensures the reviews are honest and real.\u00a0In fact, good companies encourage their users to leave a review on Trustpilot, because they are confident they offer a good service.<\/p>\n<p>In some countries, Trustpilot is not available, but I find that Facebook groups are a\u00a0good alternative. See this for example. Therefore, a company with a\u00a0rating above\u00a08.0 is a great way to start.<\/p>\n<h2>Second step: Filtering<\/h2>\n<p>The process is very straightforward. Starting from top to bottom I search every company\u00a0on Trustpilot and look for 2 things:<\/p>\n<p>a) Rating above 8.0<br \/>\nb) Enough reviews (more than 100?)<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s what I did. Looking at the first company, \u201cEconomy energy\u201d this is what I get:<\/p>\n<p><i>Gas &amp; Electricity companies usually have an \u2018energy\u2019 ending on their name. It would make a HUGE difference!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pretty bad scores so far or not enough reviews, but here\u2019s one that may work!<\/p>\n<p>Tonik energy apparently offer not only an affordable price but also a great service. 9.2 is a pretty high rating for a Gas &amp; Electricity company. On the plus side,\u00a0Tonik energy provide a 100% renewable energy package.. An astonishing <b>9.7 rating and\u00a0520 reviews, I mean holy shit!<\/b> It takes a lot of effort to keep 520 people close to \u201cI would not change a thing about this company\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>No exit fees, no lock-in contracts, London-based company with a vision.<\/p>\n<p>I visited their website and was very impressed with the company\u00a0manifesto. Going to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxymonkey.com\/recommends\/octopus\/\" data-eafl-id=\"1653\" data-eafl-parsed=\"1\" class=\"eafl-link eafl-link-text eafl-link-cloaked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cabout us\u201d page<\/a> I found out about their solar panel investment. Apparently, they are the largest investor in solar farms in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>They encourage you to take energy that leaves no carbon footprint on the planet. You can select a 50% renewable plan or go full green\u00a0which is slightly more expensive (\u00a33 per month more for my plan) but makes you feel better ?<\/p>\n<p>How awesome is that &#8211; and that they manage to remain competitive and offer cheaper prices than the Big 6. This tells me they run their company very efficiently and \/ or the big companies make huge profits out of us.<\/p>\n<p>Both Tonik and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxymonkey.com\/recommends\/octopus\/\" data-eafl-id=\"1653\" data-eafl-parsed=\"1\" class=\"eafl-link eafl-link-text eafl-link-cloaked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Octopus<\/a> leverage smart technology to offer a great service. Between those 2, I thought I\u2019m happy to pay a\u00a0slightly more expensive price (\u00a33.75 per month) to get a more validated choice.<\/p>\n<h2>Sign up with the chosen one<\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxymonkey.com\/recommends\/octopus\/\" data-eafl-id=\"1653\" data-eafl-parsed=\"1\" class=\"eafl-link eafl-link-text eafl-link-cloaked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Octopus<\/a> were not available through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxymonkey.com\/recommends\/uswitch\/\" data-eafl-id=\"1651\" data-eafl-parsed=\"1\" class=\"eafl-link eafl-link-text eafl-link-cloaked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">uSwitch\u2019s<\/a> autoswitch plan,\u00a0where they handle everything\u00a0for you. A bit of manual work was needed to visit their website, provide my details and verify I want to switch.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, the boarding process was very straightforward. I just needed to fill in a few fields like name &amp; address. My intention\u00a0was to give you a light nudge.. a bit of motivation to optimise your life a little bit. It&#8217;s not only about the money &#8211; sure I saved \u00a3707 per year according to uSwitch.
