Regarding gold and commodities in general, I feel the point was inflation protected diversification. Stock markets crash every decade or so and being able to rebalance after such a catastrophe could save you a lot. I would be interested in what other vehicles of inflation protected diversification is out there and worth while, other than real estate, income protected bonds and commodities.

Hey QT, holding gold is debatable indeed. I don’t hold any. Gold and S&P have been outperforming each other in cycles. S&P has outperformed Gold from 2012-2018. Will this continue? Noone knows! It’s just another asset class with its own characteristics.

Btw, I just read your latest post, I loved it. I also get those investing nightmares, but more about the sequence of returns not whether investing will work in the long term. Of course, it will!

Take it steady :)

First time visitor….HTOTW was my second major FI read after RDPD. Again, whilst I don’t agree with everything he says, there is so much wisdom and great advice. His book really kicked me down the path to FI.

The gold question…..one I am still trying to answer…..buffet doesn’t have any….but I bet every Royal family in the world have a jacuzzi full of it….gold brittanias are vat and cgt free…..

He has a fund you know? Too expensive for me but he is essentially active trading passive funds.

QT

Ah… this list… Mine keeps growing faster than I’m able to consume it. But I guess that’s a good thing – I’ll never run out of good books to read :)

Thanks, Fumonchu!
